Navy Girls

Navy Girls

Author's note: This story is dedicated to Jennie, a very sweet and loyal reviewer and friend. The idea came from a conversation with my friend Joan; therefore, she deserves kudos for her indirect part. Jennie's character is Jennie Bayer, she is the mean character. The secondary character is dedicated to Joan, her name is Carrie Wilscot.

Jennie's POV

My father didn't want me to join the navy. He was a former Marine himself. I know he was trying to protect me from what he had seen. However Carrie and I were determined to join the Navy after college. I am grown now. At the time of our fight, I didn't want to understand my father's point of view. I wanted to go out there and save lives. Carrie and I were to be Navy nurses. At first Carrie was assigned to Texas, yet today she is coming to Fort Lauderdale to check out the navy base I work at. Hopefully we'll get to work together soon. If I only knew what was to come next. If I did, I would have never brought Carrie to work with me.

Carrie's Pov

It was a short flight from Houston, so I decided to check out the naval base with Jennie. I couldn't believe how much she'd grown as a person. Five years ago, if someone told me Jennie Bayer was going to live in Fort Lauderdale against her father's wishes, I would not believe them. When we first met in Chemistry for Health, I never expected that she would ever be this independent and defiant at the same time. I would call my parents once or twice a week. However Jennie was instructed to call them twice a day. I had to know if she still was on speaking terms with her family. So on the way to the naval base I did.

"So have you been talking to your family much since you moved here?" I inquired.

Jennie sighed.

"Mom talks to me often. Christa and Lawrence do once in awhile. She tells me Henry always stops by and asks about me. Actually he is in the process of moving down here this month," Jennie stated.

I looked at her with concern.

"Your father doesn't talk you much, does he?" I asked.

Jennie smiled as she shook her head.

"Although there was something quite funny last Saturday. Henry stopped by when my Dad picked up. My father muttered a hello and threw the phone to Henry," Jennie stated.

I laughed.

"Now that's something I'd love to see on video," I quipped as we pulled into the base.

Switches to narrative POV

Billie Naylor had been rejected from the Navy for the third time. He had tried repealing. So what if he had a run in with the law over stalking his ex-girlfriend. He had never gotten what he wanted. However today he was going to take revenge upon the only place he ever wanted to be part of... Unfortunately Jennie Bayer and Carrie Wilscot were just entering the naval base shortly before he decided to put his plan in action.

He watched the girls go into the building. He followed them ten minutes later. It sounded like one of them was giving the other a tour... Billie smiled to himself. There wasn't anyone stopping him now. He would grab a couple of hostages and make his demands.

Suddenly a uniformed man tapped him on the shoulder.

"Excuse me sit, but I need to see some ID," the man stated.

Billie took out the gun,

"Good-bye chum!" Billie exclaimed after he shot him.

In the distance Jennie and Carrie froze in horror at the sight. Billie turned and pointed the gun in their direction.

Jennie's POV

Three feet from us, was the glass wall that separated us from the man I recognized as Billie Naylor. He knew what we saw. Carrie and I both knew we were the only ones around when he killed the security guard. The patients were in the building over. Luckily most of the personnel were over there. Carrie and I could distract him. We had to. There were several other people's lives in danger. We never though it would happen on U.S soil. Of course we are navy nurses. Our duty was to save solders from the battlefield until we could transfer them to a safe place. Now it was a whole different matter. We never considered that some insane man would just walk into a Navy base in Florida to avenge the fact that the Navy had rejected him. I heard about him two weeks before. I just never thought he would come here and cause this havoc.

"We have to keep him on this floor," I whispered.

"Okay what do we do? I mean this scenario never crossed my mind," Carrie whispered.

"Me neither. We just have to keep him here, until someone notices that security guard is missing. We have to keep him on this floor; there is a large storage closet down the hall. Let's start towards there," I stated.

Billie was staring at us.

Suddenly he aimed the gun at us.

"Carrie, run!" I shouted.

Suddenly she fell to the floor. The jerk had shot her in the leg.

He started to edge towards us. I bent down and tried to access the wound. It had grazed her below the knee. She was bleeding.

Billie gave me a stern glare.

"I'll need you unharmed for now. Come on; let's go where no one is around. I need to make a few calls," Billie said as he pointed the gun at us.

Carrie's POV

Jennie helped me limp over to the janitor's closet with Billie Naylor following close behind. I knew we had to salvage the lives of the other people in the vanity, so I pretended to be hurt more than I actually was. I hoped Jennie would take the hint and maybe we could get out of this situation alive.

Billie shut the door behind him. He turned to us.

"Cover her wound up. There should be a rag around this place," Billie snapped.

Jennie took the hint. I sighed with relief but only for a moment.

"She needs more than some dirty rag. She's bleeding a lot," Jennie quipped.

Billie grew angry.

"Shut up! I'm not buying it! Don't try anything otherwise I'll pop your brains out and no one will be able to save your friend," Billie stated.

Jennie sighed as she reached for the cleanest rag and tied it around my wound. I exchanged a sympathetic expression with her. Jennie Bayer had never been so vulnerable her in her life. Usually she had me or a family member for support. But now for the first time in her life she had to do this alone.

Jennie's Pov

"So tell me Jennie, who would they send in to save you two? Who would dare come here and give me what I want," Billie inquired with a sneer.

I had caught Carrie's hint but I knew pretense could easily become reality. Sooner or later Carried would need meds and a proper bandage for her wound. This was my call. For now I was just shaken up and physically I was completely normal.

I sighed. I gave Carrie an assuring glance. Today for the first time ever I would prove myself worthy as an individual that could possibly save the day.

"NCIS. You might want to contact them since we are both Navy girls," I stated.

Billie smiled gleefully and he started to dial the operator.

While his back was turned I turned to Carrie.

"Remember NCIS, has great people, hopefully I can get through to them.

"It's a great idea but until then, you think you can handle this lunatic?" Carrie asked fearfully.

"Carrie, I need you to hold on. I will do whatever it takes to get us out of here," I stated with more strength than I knew I possessed.

Switches to Narrative POV

Henry Patterson had just reached NCIS headquators, twenty miles from where Jennie and Carrie were being held hostage.

An operator interrupted a meeting with Bob Almond.

"Sir, an urgent message from Fort Lauderdale has just arrived. Two navy nurses are being held hostage by Billie Naylor," the operator stated.

"What are their names?" Bob inquired from intercom.

"Well the phone belongs to a Jennie," the operator stated.

Henry sat across from him stunned. "This couldn't be happening. Jennie couldn't be…," Henry's thoughts were interrupted as Bob asked about casualties.

"I'm sorry sir but she has been cut off," the operator stated.

Henry held his breath.

Suddenly the other line rang.

"Sir, a Billie Naylor is holding for you," the receptionist stated.

Bob turned to Henry.

"Patterson looks like we'll need your help today, it may be premature but …," Bob trailed off.

"Don't worry sir. I'll do it. I have a good friend that is a navy girl," Henry stated.

Carrie's Pov

Billie Naylor snatched the phone from Jennie's hands before she could finish reporting to NCIS. I could tell from her expression that she gotten through but wished she could have given them more information.

I gave her a considerate nod. I don't think I could keep my composure as long as she did. Anyone who ever doubted Jennie Bayer before today would be proven wrong. Meanwhile Billie was on the phone with the director of NCIS Florida. He made his demands clear if they didn't give him a helicopter and ten million dollars he was going to shoot Jennie to death in front of me.

When Billie finished talking he turned and looked evilly at us.

"Carrie is going to have to live with the fact she had to watch you helplessly die," Billie said.

"What if they fulfill your demands?" Jennie inquired.

"If they spot the dead body out there, then I'll have to kill you anyway," Billie snapped.

He dialed again and then took out his gun.

He shot two bullets above our heads.

"The girls are fine for now. If you don't get here soon, one of them will be dead and the other will have to watch her die," Billie said into the phone.

I looked at Jennie helplessly. I had lost a bit of blood; I had no energy to really stand at this point or to help her.

Jennie's Pov

Billie Naylor was growing angrier by the minute. I knew whether or not he got what he wanted, he would try to kill me. I took deep breaths as he walked over to me. Fear was etched on Carrie's face. I had never seen her so afraid and not in control ever. Suddenly he grabbed me by the arm and pointed the gun at my temple.

"This is the way it's going to go down. I'll shoot you and then they'll have to given in order to rescue your friend. They want to look good for atleast saving one life today," Billie scoffed.

As Billie hesitated, I began to have flashbacks of my life. My siblings Christa and Lawrence, and me playing at the park. My parents. Mom taking me shopping and teaching me how to make a few dishes. Dad hugging me after I graduated college, and the last time we really talked. I remembered the fight and I now I wished I could go back and fix things, if I only knew this was going to happen anyway. Then suddenly I had a flash of me pretending to be Henry's love interest, in order to teach his ex-girlfriend how much she gave up. It had worked and everyone had a great laugh about it. My father had been relieved. He was hoping I hadn't just jumped into a relationship with Henry.

Billie got ready to pull the trigger. I waited for the bullet to go into my head. However I opened my eyes to see Billie Naylor on the ground and Henry Patterson standing before me. All I could do was begin to sink to the ground. I had held on long enough anyway. I couldn't believe it.

Switches to Narrative POV

Carrie was taken to the infirmary while Jennie gave her testimony to NCIS and the local police. She returned to the base to see the first floor being designated as a crime scene. She stared at it for a few minutes before checking on Carrie.

Jennie found Henry awaiting her presence.

"She's in room 302," Henry quipped.

"Thanks for everything Henry," Jennie said with a weary smile.

Henry smiled.

"I was doing my duty such like everyone else," Henry stated.

Jennie put a hand on her forehead. She never felt so relieved in her life.

Henry placed a hand on her shoulder.

"Are you all right?" Henry asked with concern.

Jennie nodded.

"It was a pretty close call that's all. I guess I better go check on Carrie," Jennie said as she turned to go.

"Jennie, you did great today. Don't ever doubt that," Henry stated.

"Thanks," Jennie stated before walking away.

Carrie's Pov

I lay on the bed feeling much better; Henry had told me he would wait down the hall for Jennie to show up. I decided that when she came in, I would suggest she tries to reconnect with him. Maybe they can become something more than old friends.

"Hey Carrie," Jennie said from the doorway.

"Come here. I have a few admissions to make," I stated.

Jennie slumped into a chair and then I began to talk to her.

"First this could have happened anywhere. It's not your fault. You did a fabulous job. You fulfilled your duty as a navy girl and my best friend. Also Henry is a great guy. You shouldn't lose contact with him again," I finished.

Jennie smiled slightly.

"How do you read me so well? Oh and the thing about Henry…," Jennie trailed off.

"Give him a chance. I am giving this place a chance. We could have been threatened anywhere. Besides in Texas everyone carries guns," I stated.

Henry came in a few minutes later to let Jennie know her parents had arrived and mine were flying back from their trip at this very moment

Jennie's Pov

"Dad," I whispered. He was the first person I saw as I walked out of Carrie's room. He hugged me.

"I heard about everything Jennie. I'm sorry for not supporting you," Mr. Bayer stated.

"It's my fault. I didn't exactly leave Philadelphia on good terms. I promise from now on I'll consider your side of the situation," I promised.

Later I turned to hug my Mom and my two younger siblings. Lawrence had left school and Christa had skipped her internship. They kept on saying they were proud of me.

We all went out to dinner that evening; just happy things had turned out all right for me and Carrie.

We brought back some dinner for Carrie. She was stuck in the hospital for a few more days.

"Jennie you never got check out. Are you sure you are all right?" Carrie inquired.

"I'm fine. I just had a few fried nerves that are all," I assured her.

Henry pulled me aside.

"Are you sure? Billie would have killed you if I hadn't been able to..," Henry trailed off.

"The fact is you made it Henry. That's all that matters," I assured him before giving him a peck on the cheek,

"How about I get you home. Your family is waiting," Henry stated.

"Thanks Henry," I stated.

We started on our way. When we stepped out into the night, I felt a chill go through my body as I realized how close I was to leaving a few things unfinished. My relationship with my father was on the mend. Something was brewing between me and Henry. Maybe I was mistaken but suddenly when I erupted into sobbing, Henry held me until I was able to compose myself.

We walked around the block for awhile. I couldn't help but recall that night when I pretended to be his girlfriend in order to teach his ex a lesson.

Suddenly I turned to face him.

"Henry how come you kept on asking about me, after I moved here," I inquired.

Henry smiled.

"The answer is quite clear Jennie, there is something I am feeling but I don't know for sure what it is," Henry stated.

"Well once you figure it out, let me know. You always know how to find me," I whispered.

"Well that's the magical thing about our bond. I always end up following you," Henry whispered back.

I smiled and then walked into my condo.

In the days to follow, my phone was ringing off the hook. Reporters kept calling despite the fact there had been media control set up. In the end Carrie and I agreed to go on the View and talk to Barbara Walters.

Carrie and I had a great time talking to them but the event would linger in our lives forever. There was one really stupid man who asked if we were interested in making a movie.

"Sorry but we didn't do anything extreme. We aren't the only ones ever to be caught in a hostage crisis," I relayed to the man before hanging up.

Carrie lived with me until she got her own place up the street. Three months after the incident, Henry came to my door.

"Jennie I was thinking and I have come to a conclusion," Henry stated.

"Well what have you decided Henry?" I inquired.

"I'd like to take you out on a real date but there is a condition," Henry stated.

"What is it?" I asked.

"If it doesn't work out, we'll still stay friends," Henry stated.

"Glad to see we are on the same page Patterson. I'll get ready and then we'll go," I stated with a grin.

Henry seated himself on the couch and I emerged ten minutes later.

"That was pretty quick," Henry quipped.

"Well being a navy girl means I got to be quick," I quipped.

He gave me his arm and we headed outside. Who knew where this thing between us was going, but for now we were both content.
